Descendants of CHARLES LOCKINGTON

Please note that to preserve privacy this tree stops well short of the last few generations. Much of the data to current generations is on my files but not on the website. I am happy to make it available to relatives who contact me individually.
With each passing generation an enormous amount of family history often disappears forever. I can recall my uncle telling me that the Lockingtons  went over to Ireland from England with King James I invasion, settlement or call it what you wish. Boundaries had been set by the English in 1584. The first Lockingtons we can find are recorded in County Cavan in Ireland in 1610, just after the defeat of so called "rebels" whom I suspect were not at all.  John Lockington served with Brockwell Taylor Esq and Edward Lockington was one of the tenants of the Bishop of Kilmoore whom history records of actuall wishing to Kill less, a kindly chap who was respected by both sides. In 1649 Cromwell defeated the "Rebellious Catholics" who were led by the famous O'Reilly and it seems that the Lockington family shared in the confiscated  land spoils of war, and some of them are still on the same land today. Interestingly history repeated itself on the other side of the Planet some 200 + years later and Lockingtons in New Zealand still occupy some land that was also confiscated from the Maori War years. We have lost track of what happened for the next 150 years until we get to Charles in about 1791. We are not too sure about Charles, some of the dates don't seem to integrate too well but we do know that in about 1841-47 Cavan was badly affected by famine. The population was 243,000 in Cavan and those who could leave, did so. By 1851 the population of Cavan dropped to 174,000. Listed below are totally unverified links to Lockingtons in the Pacific Islands which I have put in from records that have given to me from them. I would like to think they are correct, maybe time will tell.

3. JAMES3 LOCKINGTON (CHARLES2, GEORGE1) was born 1846 in COOTE HILL, County Cavan, Ireland, and died 04 Jun 1922 in KATIKATI. He married MARY ANNE WRIGHT Abt. 1872, daughter of WILLIAM WRIGHT and MARY MCRAE. She was born Abt. 1847 in COOTEHILL, CO CAVAN, Ireland, and died 27 Sep 1921 in TAURANGA.

Notes for JAMES LOCKINGTON:

Came out to NZ on the "Lauderdale" arrived on 30th Jan 1874. Walked from Thames

to KatiKati to meet up with friends who had come out with George Vessey

Stewarts party. Settled in KatiKati and built first house with timber from the

Stone's mill in Thames where he had worked. House is still in good repair

(1997) having been refurbished about 1980. His farm was called Green Hills and

is on Highfields  Rd on the hill to the left about 500m along.

Notes for JOSEPH SLEVIN:

Came to NZ on Carrisbrook Castle in 1876.In 1891 moved to Waihi where he

established Public Baths, mentioned in Cyclopedia of NZ 1900. His farm in

Lockington Road

(see old parchment title), is called Cherry Mount. This was in 2 titles, and

was sold to James H Lockington and became part of the James H Lockington

estate. Most of it is now owned by the the Cherry Mount Trust,  not actually relatives but family friends from way back.

A small part (about 10 acres) is still owned by Niol & Ursula Lockington.

Notes for JOHN IRWIN LOCKINGTON:

We think John was born about 1880 in Ireland & possibly went to the Cook

Islands to manange The Cook Islands trading Co in Rarotonga about 1908.From

there he was transferred to Aitutaki to manage the branch there. He married

Ngaetua Rikiau (who died about 1950 in Rarotonga) and they had 2 children, Io

(1910) & Charlie (about 1912). Charlie died in Aitutaki about 1984. Io married

Teokotai Tom about 1927. (Teokotai mean "the only one"). They had about 17

children, one of which is named Drury, & lives in Blockhouse Bay PH 6266772.

John returned to the UK at the outbreak of World War 1 and was never heard of

again.

"Uncle Billy" used to own the "Green Acres" motor camp in Whangamata. I can

remember he drove a green Hillman (about 1938 model). Seemed a nice old fellow.

Went over the bank with his horse & gig at the Waihi end of the Athenree gorgea nd lived to tell the tale.
